Travels China

 Amazing Faith Journey through China

China , in its early days, was known as the land of the “three teachings” : Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism . This trio of religions demonstrated powerful effects on China’s cultural progression and have since been joined by the folk religions of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam in recent years . As a visitor, you will find that the dynastic churches, cemeteries, and temples you encounter during your religious tourism trip reflect this eclectic formation of Chinese civilizations.

You won't be short of learning opportunities and excitement when you walk through ornate temples and modest cemeteries. These attractions, in addition to preserving religious teachings, buildings, and statues, honor the lessons learned within the beauty of nature. Embark on hiking tours through small villages and bustling towns . Many temples coexist among forests. Others are located alongside China's interconnected rivers. It's almost as if there's religious significance everywhere, and it's up to you to capture it all. Here are some must-see places to visit on your next religious tourism trip to China.

New Kaifeng/Harbin Synagogue

The New Synagogue of Harbin, China

Kaifeng is the birthplace of the Jewish population, dating back to their earliest migration to China. Jews are said to have taken the Silk Road to China from Central Asia—possibly India—and built the Kaifeng Synagogue between 960 and 1279. Angry natives destroyed the temple in 1860, and it was never rebuilt, but many Jews still tour the area and visit the Chinese Jewish community centers and the Kaifeng Museum

If you’re looking to explore a variety of religious buildings, you can visit a 108-year-old synagogue that Harbin reopened in 2014. The crimson building, 18 hours north of Kaifeng, features European architecture and can seat up to 800 people, making it one of the largest synagogues in Northeast China . It often hosts festivals honoring China’s Jewish population , as Harbin sheltered many Jews between the two World Wars . Additionally, the country’s first Jewish cemetery opened there in 1903. The Harbin Jewish History and Culture Exhibition is open to all tourists who wish to gain further knowledge of that history.

The Chinese Oriental Church in Beijing

The current church underwent major repairs and maintenance in the 1980s, but has since become a center for religious tourism in Beijing . Visitors are instantly drawn to the Oriental Church's beautiful white and gray Romanesque architecture, symmetrically engraved with biblical symbols. Visitors can also attend day and evening services. The church is beautifully illuminated during celebratory occasions such as the Chinese New Year .
